The World On My Doorstep

An ever-expanding postcard blog

An Overdose of Cutes!

BabyCheetahWonderful Ruky  sent me this adorable card from South Africa and he tells me that every time he sees this postcard in the store it makes him think of me. All I can say is – WHY didn’t you send it before, Ruhan?! It’s just too adorable! Its little face just looks so cute (but also cheeky in that “I just farted but I’m totally pulling this cute face so you won’t get angry” kind of way). He also says that his dad agreed that it should be sent to me and so, eventually, it made its way to little old Guernsey with a surprise lovely long letter. My heart melted. Love it!

Fairytale Fun

FairytaleHatThis card is totally awesome! Larisa in Russia tells me she chose it because she saw other drawings by Irina Petelina in my favourites. I just love the artist’s style, it’s so fantasical! The name of this piece is “Travelers in the Land of Dreams: World of Fantasy” and you can see why! Larisa also tells me her favourite name is Evgeniy – the name of her father, her niece and her husband! I can see why it appeals!

A Fresian Cow (And Other Things)

FryslanCowThis fun, colourful postcard comes from Annette who lives in Friesland – in the Netherlands. She tells me the area has got its own language and culture and is very relaxed which she loves. It certainly looks gorgeously green! Great card!

Venezuela’s Astonishingly Slow Postal System

VenezuelaWaterfallSome of you may remember my longest travelled postcard, sent by Luis in Venezuela last year and taking 246 days to arrive with me. During that time, I messaged him to let him know I hadn’t received the card and on December 7th last year, he posted me this beauty which arrived on June 6th. That’s 182 days. ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY TWO. Impressive. Anyway, I sent him another card as a thanks for sending a second to me. This beauty shows Angel Falls – the highest waterfall in the world at 979 metres. It’s amazing and I love it! Luis tells me that it is located in the Canaima National Park which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1994. Spectacular card, and what a voyage it took to reach me!

Neolithic Mines

ArchaeologyExcAlthough all that Jean Marie in Belgium says on this card is “Bonjour de Belgique” a little investigation on my part has revealed that this image is of Spiennes Neolithic flint mines during their excavation. Very cool card considering my love for archaeology!

My Quickest Belarussian Postcard

BelarusChapelThis cool card comes from Iryna in Belarus and by some miracle only took 3 days to get here! That must be a first for both of our postal systems! Anyway, she tells me that this card showing the ancient town of Val shows a typical Belarussian landscape. Lovely!

My Family In The Lake District

WaterLakeDistrictAnother late addition to my blog (they all are these days!) this time from my family (read: my mum, with my dad signing his name at the end too) who were on holiday in the Lake District. They sent this at the end of May and my mum tells me that it was beginning to feel really summery with swallows and blue tits nesting in the porch. This card is a painting by John Ruskin of a stream in his garden – my parents visited his house where apparently there is also a yummy cafe. Great card!

Cyprus via Germany

CyprusCliffI received this card over a month ago from Ilona in Germany but have been so busy with work and life that I haven’t been updating my blog very quickly! Anyway, she tells me that she bought this card on a trip to Cyprus and is happy to send it to me since it is a card sent from one island to another (with a short stop in Germany). Cute!

Kazakhstan!

KazakhstanThis beautiful card comes from Darya in Kazakhstan and shows Mount Okzhetpes in Borovoe which she tells me is a beautiful area in the north of the country, not far from the capital. Apparently many people go there on holiday – I am not surprised! It is stunning! I love this card so much – it really shows off the natural beauty of the country!

Montevideo

UruguayThis great card comes from Agustina in Uruguay. It shows Montevideo, which she tells me is a cool city to live in and that the bus she takes to school goes along the motorway you can see in the picture. I really like being able to picture the sender of the card within the card, so it’s really interesting to hear that! She also mentions her favourite part of the city is the soothing sea. Lovely card with some beautiful doodles on the back too!
