The World On My Doorstep

An ever-expanding postcard blog

The Australian Antarctic Exhibition

Scan - Version 2I just love this beauty from Vikki in Australia! This maxicard, celebrates the Australian Antarctic Expedition led by geologist Douglas Mawson which took place between 1911 and 1914 and was the most scientifically rewarding expedition of its time. Charting 2000 miles of coastline, the voyage expanded knowledge of geology, glaciology and terrestrial biology. Amazing! Incidentally, when a centenary scientific voyage retraced Mawson’s steps in 2013, they got stuck!

Another Antarctica!

AntarcticaPenguinsThis beautiful card comes from Dieter in Germany and I can’t believe how lucky I am to receive it! He tells me that he worked in the O’Higgins (German) Scientific Base in Antarctica in 1997 as an operator at the 9m radiotelescope which receives data about the Earth’s rotation and movement of its tectonic plates. He has also sent me a link to a site where you can watch the penguins on a webcam between November and January. To make this card even better, it even has old rubber ink stamp prints on it from Dieter’s base! LOVE this card!

A Postcard From Antarctica!!!

Well, I never thought I would be lucky enough to receive a postcard from Antarctica, and this one is also my first ever maxicard! All the way from Kristie in Australia, this beautiful picture shows some of Australia’s Antarctic territory. She tells me how she would love to one day do an Antarctic cruise – got to admit, it would be pretty amazing, even if it was a little cold!
